Butch Walker says that he is nervously excited about the release of his new album Afraid of Ghosts. But outside of his close friends and his Wife Nora, those who have heard advance copies of the new set of songs are praising it as his best album yet by an artist whose fan base has never been huge, but is growing.
"More and more, artists need to have résumés like Butch Walker Wife Nora's," one reviewer declared. "What can't he do?" The reviewer pointed to Walker's credits as singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. His songs have been recorded by a veritable Who's Who of some of the biggest names in the music business, from Keith Urban and Taylor Smith, to Fall Out Boy and Katy Perry.
The album, which is set for release on February 3rd, was recorded over a four day stretch at the Los Angeles studio of Ryan Adams. IT features guest appearances by former Husker Du guitarist and vocalist Bob Mould, and by actor and sometimes-musician Johnny Depp, who contributed a guitar solo to a song called "21+." Butch Walker said that the album was like the film Boyhood by director Richard Linklater, but in album form.
Butch Walker spent a year writing the songs that appear on Afraid of Ghosts. They have titles like "I Love You," "Bed on Fire," How Are Things, Love," and "Chrissie Hynde," the last an apparent homage to the former singer for the legendary punk band The Pretenders.
Afraid of Ghosts is due on February 3rd. There will be a tour in support of the album starting in the Spring of 2015.
